Bungay Town Trust

The Town Trust is currently working with an architect and specialist contractors to repair the iconic Butter Cross in Market Place. The work is in two parts:

  • repairs and repainting of the wooden pillars of the structure, many of which are in poor state, and repairs to the lead work on the dome;
  • removal of the cast iron statue of Justice on the top of the Butter Cross so that it can be repaired, including removal of the concrete that was poured into the statue at some point during the twentieth century. The statue is being repaired by contractor Rupert Harris at his workshop in London.

We expect the work on the structure to be completed by early October. The work on the statue will take longer, with the statue due to be replaced in Spring 2027.

The works are likely to cost more than £100,000. The Trust itself will be funding this work, with the support of grants, but we would also welcome support – however large or small – from anyone able to help to cover these costs.
